2. Approval of minutes of committee meeting on 7th July 2004
The minutes were approved with minor changes
3. Matters arising
The high costs of attending the Museums Association conference were noted, especially the lack of difference between the 2-day and 3-day rate.
4. Arrangements for discussion on 'Collections for the Future'
It was agreed that Ian Carradice would chair the discussion, with Gillian Findlay (SMC) asked to introduce the project and summarise the discussions held on 7th September by the Scottish Museums Council and Scottish Museums Federation. It was felt that there would be no need to divide into groups for discussion. Key issues in the document were highlighted for discussion. It was agreed that a summary of the discussion would form the basis for a UMIS response to the Museums Association.
5. Arrangements for AGM
The proposed agenda was agreed. Evelyn Silber reported that she would be presenting the Treasurer's Report and UMAC report on behalf of Ewen Smith.
6. Arrangements for 2004 Conference
Jacky MacBeath distributed leaflets for the conference and reported that Steven de Clerq had agreed to take part in the panel discussion. It was agreed that Alison Morrison-Low be invited to be the third panel member. Leaflets would be distributed at the Museums Association conference and that UMIS members should distribute leaflets.
7. AOB
Opening Doors to Learning
It was noted that almost all copies had been distributed, leaving a few for distribution at the Museums Association conference. The existence of a pdf version on the UMIS website was highlighted. There were still copies of University Museums in the UK available for distribution from the Hunterian Museum.
Regional Development Challenge Fund
Dawn Kemp reported that a revised bid for the Scotland and Medicine project had been submitted, while Neil Curtis reported that a bid by Aberdeen University, Aberdeen City Council and the Aberdeenshire Council had also been submitted.
Anatomy collections
Dawn Kemp reported that an ad hoc meeting was being arranged for 11th November with Steven de Clerq for those working with Anatomy collections.
Culture Commission
Evelyn Silber reported that she is a member of an SMC-sponsored working party that is acting as the museum sector's main conduit to the Culture Commission. She would be speaking about this at the Museums Association's conference to highlight the key issues being discussed.
8. Date of next meeting
No date for the next meeting was set, though it was agreed that a meeting could be held before the conference if requested by Jacky MacBeath.
