Description

The Hunterian is home to one of the world’s best collections of the work of the American-born artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903). This work, ‘Harmony in Red: Lamplight’ was painted c.1884-86 and shows Beatrix Godwin, who was to marry Whistler in 1886. Here Whistler was interested in how the artificial lighting in his studio altered the appearance of colours – in this case the red of the cloak, hat and backdrop. Beatrix was a gifted artist in her own right and a number of her paintings, etchings and drawings are also included in The Hunterian collection.
