Museum Mooches
On each Museum Mooch we’ll take you to a different part of the city campus housing displays of our collections. This will include access to collections such as Art, Dentistry, Physics and Comics Art.
We will start each tour outside the Enquiry Centre (next to DUSA) before taking a brief walk to the collection of the day! You’ll see displays and artworks hidden away in corridors and classrooms across the campus. Each tour will last around 30-45 minutes.
28th September – Natural Philosophy & Flowers
Originally called Natural Philosophy, the Physics department was established in 1895 thanks to a bequest by Margaret Harris. In this tour we’ll explore some physics instruments and equipment and discover more about how they were used in teaching and research. We’ll also have a look at the gardens of the Geddes Quadrangle, before heading into the Carnegie Building to view some unique artworks.
12th October – Hawkhill House
On this mooch, we’ll open the doors to the museum stores, and you’ll get to see where we keep all of our fascinating objects when not on display. Have a look around this charming eighteenth-century building, the oldest on campus! Today it’s home to collections of fine and applied arts, scientific instruments, natural history and many more weird and wonderful things!
26th October – Tales in the Tower
You might have seen our exhibitions in the Tower Foyer and Lamb Galleries, but did you know there’s a whole display of comics art in the Tower Building, too? Whether you’re a fan of comic books or not, these illustrations will surely entertain. You’ll also be able to take a look at some other ways of storytelling in our Tales of the Unexpected Exhibition before it closes. We’ll climb (or rather take the lift) to the top of the tower to admire the view across the Tay.
9th November – Mouths & Minds
In this tour, we’ll visit the Dental School to see some comparative anatomy and dental specimens, including some that have been used in forensic investigations!
Once you’ve shuddered at teeth and beasts, we’ll walk over to the Scrymgeour Building to view our psychology displays where you’ll see some of the demonstration tools used to teach psychology throughout the years.
23rd November – Dalhousie Art Tour
The Dalhousie Building is home to over 50 works of art, from some of our biggest paintings and sculptures to minute engravings. This tour will take you through the building to show you some of the best examples, from paintings and prints to collages and photographs, there’s an amazing range of artworks on display. You’ll also get to see our “Art Spaces” which have been installed for you to take a moment of mindfulness between your studies.
