Description

This statue, attributed to Sir John Steell (1804-1891), is a copy of one by Francois Duquesnoy (1597-1643) which is in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It was commissioned in about 1850 by the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company, who gifted it to the University of St Andrews following the closure of their Edinburgh Office in 1964.

The fully restored statue can now be seen guarding the entrance to the Wardlaw Museum.
