Our Work: Decolonisation & Repatriation

Decolonisation is defined by the Museums Association as ‘a long-term process that seeks to recognise the integral role of empire in British museums – from their creation to the present day’. Scotland – and university museums in Scotland particularly – are now seen in the UK as leading the way in exploring decolonisation, restitution and repatriation of collections and practices.

This sheet was produced in November 2022 for the Museums Association Conference 2022 advocacy event, showcasing examples of UMIS members’ work for stakeholders and Scottish Government. This is just a selection of our work in this area.
